In this episode of the InFlow Podcast, I share my secret to how to boost your productivity as a business leader.
When we speak about how to boost your productivity, one assumes we will be talking about strategic planning, streamlined processes, and effective delegation.
While all of these things are important to boost your productivity, there is one element that we often neglect.
If you follow me on social media, you might know that Jack, Sophia, and I have taken a much-needed sabbatical in Maui, Hawaii. You might be wondering why I am speaking about boosting productivity while on vacation. However, both Jack and I are clear on our goals for this month. We are using this time to turbo-charge our business in Q3 and Q4 of this year.
The secret ingredient to boost your productivity
When you are a trail-blazing entrepreneur, you have to train like an athlete in your business. You are responsible for setting the pace and have to push harder than anyone else on your team. You also have to be clear about your game plan and constantly have your eye on the bigger picture.
As a business leader, you have an enormous responsibility to yourself and those around you to never drop the ball. However, the only way to ensure that you are always at peak performance is to allow yourself time to rest and heal.
How to rest with intention
One of the easiest mistakes to make when deciding to rest is not going about it with the same intensity as you work.
The adrenaline rush of being a trail-blazing entrepreneur is fantastic and keeps me coming back for more. However, as with any stimulant, too much adrenaline can harm your body and mind. To prevent long-term burnout, you need to balance your highs with time to rest and heal.
With this in mind, I decided to start my vacation with focused and intentional rest. The goal of intentional rest is to restore your physical, mental, and spiritual balance. Once you have healed, you can stock up on all of the resources you need to boost your productivity when your rest time is over.
You cannot achieve this unless you commit to resting with the same single-minded determination as you would your next sales target.
A program for intentional rest to boost your productivity
Healing my body
I started my intentional rest program focusing on my body.
I disconnected with all the stimulants that I regularly ingest – such as sugar and caffeine – and committed to a 5-day juice-cleansing diet. This fluid-based fast provided my body with all the nutritional support it needed while detoxing.
Restoring my mind
The second part of my cleanse was to focus on mental rest.
I disconnected from the digital world for a while. And, hard as it was, I resisted the urge to check my emails, engage on social media, and check-in with my team.
Nurturing my spirit
Finally, I engaged in activities that allowed me to focus on my spiritual health.
I practiced yoga and meditation. And I spend a lot of time journaling, reflecting on my thoughts and feelings, and reconnecting with my inner self.
This rigorous program of intentional rest may seem like a lot of work. And it is because resting is a fundamental part of successful work life. It is also your secret weapon to boost your productivity in the short and long term.
How will rest boost your productivity?
The secret to boosting your productivity is not to work harder. Productivity is about using the time available to maximum effect. If you are physically, mentally, and spiritually exhausted, you cannot be productive. Therefore, resting is an integral part of work that should never be neglected or taken lightly.
You might find that you are physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted, and no amount of rest helps. In that case, you might want to ask yourself what is draining your energy. If your current job or business is the problem – a change may be the best medicine.
